Wera Alliance Academy duo showcase speed, resilience and growing potential in Round 4 of the MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship

Round 4 of the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship at Oulton Park delivered a weekend of contrasting fortunes for the Wera Alliance Academy pairing of Alfie Garford and Murray Richardson, but ultimately highlighted the strength of the team’s driver programme as Richardson secured a breakthrough maiden victory while Garford battled through significant mechanical issues to salvage valuable championship points.

Competing in mixed conditions around one of Britain’s most demanding circuits, both drivers arrived at Oulton Park eager to continue their development in the fiercely competitive JCW Sport category. By the end of the weekend, there was plenty to celebrate within the Wera Alliance Academy camp.

Richardson takes a major step forward

The standout story of the weekend came from Murray Richardson, who produced his strongest performance since stepping into the JCW ranks at the start of the season.

Showing impressive pace from the outset, Richardson made a significant leap forward throughout testing before carrying that momentum into qualifying. His reward was a breakthrough class pole position, the first of his JCW Sport career, underlining the progress he has made during the opening half of the season.

Richardson converted that speed into a series of highly competitive race performances, culminating in a superb maiden JCW Sport victory. Throughout the weekend he demonstrated improved confidence, racecraft and consistency, regularly finding himself fighting at the front of the class.

The result marks a major milestone in Richardson’s development and provides further evidence of the progress being made within the Wera Alliance Academy programme.

Garford refuses to give in

While Richardson enjoyed a breakthrough weekend, championship leader Alfie Garford was forced to overcome a series of frustrating setbacks.

A gearbox issue struck at the worst possible moment and prevented Garford from posting a representative qualifying time, leaving him on the back foot before the racing had even begun.

Unfortunately, the problem continued into Race One where the #88 MINI was left without the use of third gear, significantly compromising performance around the flowing Oulton Park circuit.

Despite the obvious disadvantage, Garford produced a determined drive to limit the damage and collect valuable championship points. As the team worked tirelessly throughout the weekend, the reigning Trophy Rookie Champion continued to fight his way forward whenever opportunities presented themselves.

Although the results sheet may not fully reflect his pace, Garford’s determination and refusal to give up highlighted the maturity that has helped establish him as one of the leading young talents in the championship.

Friendly rivalry driving both drivers forward

One of the biggest positives to emerge from Oulton Park was the increasingly competitive dynamic developing between the two Wera Alliance Academy drivers.

With Richardson now securing his first pole position and victory, and Garford continuing to set the benchmark within the team, both drivers are pushing each other to new levels.

The healthy rivalry is creating an environment where both youngsters are constantly improving, something the team believes will pay significant dividends as the season progresses.

As confidence grows within the Richardson camp and Garford looks to bounce back from a challenging weekend, the prospect of regular battles between the pair is becoming an exciting storyline within the JCW Sport category.

Driver Quotes

Murray Richardson

“Coming away with my first pole position and first win in JCW Sport is a really special feeling. We’ve worked hard all season and I feel like everything started to click this weekend. My confidence grew every session and I felt comfortable fighting at the front. Huge thanks to everyone at Wera Alliance Academy for giving me a fantastic car. Hopefully this is the first of many.”

Alfie Garford

“It wasn’t the weekend we wanted after the gearbox issues put us on the back foot from qualifying onwards. Losing third gear in Race One made things incredibly difficult, but the team worked non-stop and we kept fighting for every point available. Congratulations to Murray as well – he’s taken a massive step forward this weekend and it’s great to see the hard work paying off.”

Team Principal Pete Osborne

“Oulton Park showed exactly what this programme is about. Murray has been building towards this result for a while and to see him take his first pole and first win is fantastic. His confidence has grown massively and he’s proving he belongs at the front.

“For Alfie, it was a weekend of damage limitation. The gearbox issue was unfortunate and obviously affected his qualifying and Race One, but he never stopped fighting. The maturity he showed was excellent.

“What excites me most is seeing both drivers pushing each other. Competition within the team is healthy and I genuinely believe the battles we’re starting to see between them will help develop two very talented young drivers.”

Looking Ahead

The championship now heads into the summer break before reconvening north of the border at Knockhill for Round 5.

With Richardson carrying momentum from his breakthrough weekend and Garford eager to return to winning ways, the Wera Alliance Academy squad will head to Scotland confident of continuing their strong campaign in the MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship.

Wera Alliance duo deliver under pressure at Snetterton

Round 3 – Snetterton 300 | MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport | 23/24 May 2026

The Wera Alliance Racing Academy arrived at Snetterton for Round 3 of the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE with momentum, expectation and two young drivers continuing to build their reputations in the JCW Sport class.

Following strong showings at Donington and Brands Hatch, the pairing of Murray Richardson #8 & Alfie Garford #88 – quickly becoming known around the paddock as Murfie – headed into the Norfolk weekend ready for another test.

And Snetterton delivered exactly that. Across three races on the long, fast and technical 300 layout, both drivers had to battle more than just the stopwatch. With hot, dry weather beating down across the weekend, cockpit temperatures rose, tyres were pushed hard, and concentration became just as important as outright pace.

For Garford, it was another weekend of calm execution and front-running control in the Sport Rookie class. For Richardson, it was another important step forward – with clear improvements, stronger pace and valuable race mileage in only his early stages of JCW Sport competition.

BUILD-UP – FROM MOMENTUM TO MANAGEMENT

Snetterton is very different to Donington and Brands Hatch. Long straights, heavy braking zones and technical sequences mean the car has to be balanced, the driver has to be patient, and mistakes can cost huge chunks of time.

For Garford, the aim was to keep stacking results and protect the momentum he had built over the opening two rounds. He arrived with confidence, but also with the pressure that comes from being the benchmark in the Sport Rookie class.

Richardson’s objective was equally important. After showing flashes of speed and bravery at Brands Hatch, particularly during the wet-weather Race 3 battle, Snetterton was about turning that confidence into consistency. In the heat, over a full race distance, there was nowhere to hide – unless you count hiding in a MINI cockpit slowly turning into a greenhouse.

QUALIFYING – SPORT ROOKIE BATTLE SET

Qualifying took place in sunny, dry conditions, giving both Wera Alliance drivers a clear opportunity to set the tone for the weekend.

Garford led the Sport Rookie classification, placing the #88 Wera Alliance MINI 1st in Sport, with a best lap of 2:10.203. Richardson backed that up with 2nd in Sport, recording a 2:11.829 as he continued to build confidence around the long Snetterton lap.

The second-fastest qualifying times, used for later grid setting, kept the same Sport order: Garford remained 1st with a 2:11.180, while Richardson was 2nd on a 2:12.325.

It gave Wera Alliance a clear platform: Garford with the class benchmark, Richardson close enough to keep learning, chasing and applying pressure.

RACE 1 – RICHARDSON BANKS STRONG MILEAGE, WHILE GARFORD CONVERTS

Race 1 was about survival as much as speed. With the track bright and dry, and the field tightly packed, Garford delivered exactly what was needed. Starting deep in the overall order among the mixed JCW field, he kept the race clean, controlled the Sport contest and brought the car home 1st, setting a best lap of 2:10.972.

Richardson also made important progress. He finished 2nd in Sport, gaining race mileage and producing his best lap late in the race with a 2:13.209 on lap nine, showing that he was still pushing and still improving even as the heat and tyre degradation made life tougher.

For Garford, it was another composed class win. For Richardson, it was a disciplined finish and another step in the right direction. The result was a solid Wera Alliance one-two in Sport Rookie – the sort of tidy team result that looks simple on paper but is anything but in a boiling hot race car.

RACE 2 – RICHARDSON LEADS EARLY, GARFORD TAKES CONTROL

Race 2 gave Richardson one of his strongest moments of the weekend. The #8 Wera Alliance MINI made an excellent early impression, leading the Sport class on the opening lap before Garford took over from lap two onwards. It was a small but important marker – proof that Richardson’s confidence and reaction in race conditions were moving forward quickly.

There was frustration too, with Richardson receiving a five-second penalty for an out-of-position start, but he still completed the race 2nd in Sport, setting a best lap of 2:12.914.

Garford then settled into his rhythm and managed the class battle with maturity. He finished 1st in Sport, recording a best lap of 2:11.586, again delivering the kind of controlled performance that has become a theme of his early JCW Sport campaign.

It was another strong two-car result: Richardson showing sharper race instinct and Garford showing the calm execution needed to keep a championship campaign moving.

RACE 3 – HOT TRACK, HARD WORK, AND MORE PROGRESSION

By Race 3, the weekend had become a real physical test. The final race was again run in sunny, dry conditions, and after two previous races the drivers were dealing with heat, fatigue and the constant demand of the Snetterton 300 layout. The long lap gives no real rest – fast straights, heavy stops, technical corners, then back to doing it all again while the cockpit cooks you like Sunday dinner.

Garford produced his fastest race lap of the weekend in the finale, setting a 2:09.645 on lap seven and 1st in JCW Sport. It was his sharpest race pace of the event and another example of how he can still find more as the weekend develops.

Richardson also found a clear gain, recording his best race lap of the weekend with a 2:11.798 and finishing 2nd in Sport. That improvement mattered. Across the races, his best laps moved from the 2:13s into the 2:11s, showing genuine adaptation and a better understanding of how to extract performance from the JCW Sport car.

Garford again delivered the result. Richardson again delivered progress. Together, they gave Wera Alliance another strong class finish and more evidence that the Murfie pairing is becoming a serious asset for the team.

DRIVER COMMENT – ALFIE GARFORD #88

Alfie Garford #88 “Really happy with the weekend overall. Snetterton was a proper challenge, especially with the heat in the car, but the team gave me a strong car and we kept getting the job done. The main thing was staying consistent, keeping it clean and taking the points when they were there. It is easy to make mistakes when it is that hot and the tyres start moving around, so I am pleased with how we managed it. Murray was pushing on as well, and it is good for both of us because we are always learning from each other and pushing the team forward.”

DRIVER COMMENT – MURRAY RICHARDSON #8

Murray Richardson #8 “It was a hard weekend physically, probably one of the toughest so far with the heat, but I feel like I made another good step. There were a few things to tidy up, especially Race 2, but the pace improved through the weekend and I felt much more comfortable by Race 3. Getting the lap time down and understanding the car better was the big positive. Alfie is obviously setting a strong benchmark, so having him there gives me something to chase. I am learning every time I go out, and Snetterton felt like another proper step forward.”

The 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport season burst into life at Donington Park on the BTCC stage, with packed grandstands, a busy paddock and live ITV4 coverage.

For Alfie Garford (#88) and Murray Richardson (#8), this marked a major step up into JCW Sport. Across the weekend, both drivers delivered — combining outright performance at the front with rapid development and consistency.

BUILD-UP

Garford arrived with momentum following a championship-winning season, targeting an immediate impact at the front of the field. Alongside him, Richardson entered the weekend focused on learning quickly and building confidence in a highly competitive class.

The objective was clear — deliver results while maximising progression — and both drivers executed their roles perfectly.

QUALIFYING – FRONT ROW LOCKOUT

Both drivers delivered standout performances in qualifying. Richardson impressed with a composed and precise lap to secure a front-row start in his first JCW Sport session, immediately establishing himself at the sharp end.

Garford then went one better, committing to a high-attack lap to secure pole position, completing a Wera Alliance front row lockout and putting the team firmly in control heading into Race 1.

RACE 1 – STRONG START ON BOTH FRONTS

Garford converted pole position into a controlled lights-to-flag victory, managing the race from the front with precision, pace and composure. Behind, Richardson delivered an equally important performance, handling the pressure of a debut race start, maintaining position and racing intelligently to secure a strong points finish.

While Garford set the benchmark at the front, Richardson laid the foundation for his weekend with a clean, confident and disciplined drive.

RACE 2 – CONSISTENCY AND PROGRESSION

Race 2 saw both drivers build on their Race 1 performances. Garford remained clinical at the front, absorbing pressure and delivering another controlled drive to secure his second victory of the weekend.

Richardson showed clear progression, becoming more confident in wheel-to-wheel situations and reducing the gap to the leading group. His increased pace and assertiveness highlighted how quickly he was adapting to the demands of JCW Sport.Together, the pair demonstrated both ends of the performance spectrum — winning pace and rapid development.

RACE 3 – COMPLETE TEAM PERFORMANCE

With the reverse grid in play, Race 3 demanded patience and racecraft. Garford delivered both, working methodically through the field to complete a perfect three wins from three races — a flawless debut weekend.

Richardson capped off his weekend with his strongest drive yet, combining confidence and consistency to secure another solid finish. Fully settled into the car, his performance underlined a steep and impressive learning curve.

The final race encapsulated the weekend — dominance at the front and clear progression just behind it.

DRIVER COMMENTS

“To come into JCW Sport and take three wins is unreal. The team gave me a mega car all weekend and we executed everything perfectly.” – Alfie Garford

“Massive step up this weekend. I improved every session and by the final race I felt confident pushing properly. A strong base to build from.” – Murray Richardson

TEAM PRINCIPAL – PETE OSBORNE

“This has been an excellent opening weekend for the team. Alfie has delivered exactly what we know he’s capable of — fast, composed and clinical at the front.

But just as importantly, Murray’s progression has been extremely impressive. To come into a new class and improve every time he went out, while delivering consistent results, shows real quality.
What we’ve seen this weekend is the balance we want — performance and progression. That puts us in a very strong position moving forward.”

Alliance Racing is pleased to announce the signing of Alfie Garford and Murray Richardson for the 2026 season racing in the MINI Challenge JCW Sport class. They will be racing under the Wera Alliance Racing Academy banner.

After a breakthrough debut season in the MINI Challenge Trophy class Alfie gets the chance to test his skills in the faster JCW Sport class in 2026.

Alfie had this to say about making the step up and his hopes for the coming season.

“Looking ahead to 2026, the focus is firmly on taking the next big step forward with a move into the highly competitive JCW Sport category. It’s a formidable challenge, but exactly the kind of environment that pushes drivers to raise every aspect of their performance — and one I’m hugely excited to take on.

Continuing with the Wera Tools / Alliance Racing Academy for another season is a massive part of that journey. The academy has been central to my development so far, and having that familiar structure, support network, and shared mindset behind me again provides the perfect platform to tackle a new level of competition with confidence.

Joining me on that step up will be my 2025 team-mate and close sparring partner, Murray Richardson. Having raced closely together, pushing each other throughout the season, it’s exciting to take that rivalry into a new championship where we can continue to challenge, learn, and drive each other forward.

2026 represents more than just a new category — it’s the next phase of progression, surrounded by the right people, in the right environment, with the aim of competing at the sharp end and continuing to build toward long-term success.”

Murray, on the other hand, is only in his second ever season racing cars and comes off an impressive debut season in the MINI Challenge Trophy class that saw him building on his results and honing his race craft over the season that culminated in a victory at the Donington Park GP round of the championship.

Murray had this to say about his hopes for the season ahead and continuing his racing development in the Wera Alliance Racing Academy.

“I am extremely excited and grateful to grow and continue my journey with Wera in the Mini Challenge and I’m looking forward to pushing myself to new heights off the back of last year’s results in the trophy class! The aim for this year is to podium twice and hopefully secure a win! I can’t wait to show the talents of myself and the team by bringing home as much silverware as possible to make them proud!”

Alliance Racing team owner and Wera Alliance Racing Academy co-founder, Pete Osborne, had this to say about the signings

“With thanks to Wera tools, we’re delighted to continue our journey with both Alfie and Murray. They both had breakthrough seasons last year as team-mates in the Wera Alliance Racing Academy and worked really well as team-mates, so its great to keep them together as a team and progress their development by moving into the MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport class.

“Like most of the drivers in the academy they’re at the early part of their careers, so we get to help them grow, both as racing drivers and as young men, and the fact they get to share these experiences is something I believe is very important to their ongoing development.

“The step up to the Vertu MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport is an obvious one and it’s a great championship for drivers to improve their craft on the best circuits in the UK. We’ve been part of the Championship since 2022 as a team and it gets better and better, plus it’s a great opportunity for youngsters to compete on the BTCC package.
