Three Brands Hatch one-twos round off a remarkable 2026 season for Wera Alliance Racing Academy

Wera Alliance Racing Academy brought the curtain down on an outstanding 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport season with a dominant display at Brands Hatch, as Alfie Garford and Murray Richardson secured three consecutive one-two finishes.

Garford, who had already secured the JCW Sport Championship at Silverstone, completed his title-winning campaign with a clean sweep of all three victories around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.

Richardson followed his teammate home in second in each race and secured the fastest lap in Race 2, completing an impressive season as JCW Sport Championship runner-up.

It meant the two Academy teammates ended the year first and second in the championship having shared all 20 JCW Sport race victories between them.

QUALIFYING – DOUBLE RED FLAG DISRUPTION

The weekend got off to a frustrating start on Saturday as qualifying was disrupted by two separate red flags.

Each stoppage delayed the session and severely restricted track time, preventing around half of the grid – including Garford and Richardson – from setting representative lap times.

More importantly, neither driver was able to record the second-fastest qualifying lap normally used to determine the Race 1 grid.

With the necessary qualifying times unavailable, the starting order reverted to the result of the previous race at Silverstone.

It was an unusual beginning to the weekend, but once racing started, the Academy pair quickly returned to familiar territory.

RACE 1 – GARFORD LEADS HOME ACADEMY ONE-TWO

Garford immediately established himself at the front of JCW Sport, with Richardson following closely behind.

Despite another interrupted race, Alfie was confirmed as the class winner, with Murray taking second to secure the Academy’s first one-two of the weekend.

Garford also recorded the fastest JCW Sport lap.

Race 1: Garford P1 + Fastest Lap | Richardson P2

It was Alfie’s 16th victory of the season and the perfect start to his final weekend as the newly crowned champion.

RACE 2 – RICHARDSON TAKES FASTEST LAP

Sunday morning saw the Wera Alliance pair once again control the JCW Sport contest.

Garford secured victory number 17, but Richardson remained close throughout and demonstrated his pace by recording the fastest JCW Sport lap of the race.

The teammates crossed the line just over a second apart to record another Academy one-two.

Race 2: Garford P1 | Richardson P2 + Fastest Lap

For Murray, taking fastest lap against the driver who had dominated the championship was another indication of the progress made during his first full season of racing.

RACE 3 – THREE FROM THREE

The final race of the season offered one last opportunity to finish the campaign on a high.

Garford duly delivered.

The #88 driver took his third victory of the weekend and added another fastest lap, completing a perfect Brands Hatch hat-trick.

Richardson again followed home in second, meaning all three races at the season finale ended with the two Wera Alliance cars occupying the top two positions in JCW Sport.

Race 3: Garford P1 + Fastest Lap | Richardson P2

For Alfie, it completed a remarkable season with 18 victories from 20 races.

For Murray, another podium secured an impressive second place in the championship.

And for Wera Alliance Racing Academy, it was the perfect conclusion to a year in which its two young drivers had set the standard in JCW Sport.

2026 SEASON REVIEW

ALFIE GARFORD – JCW SPORT CHAMPION

Garford’s first season in JCW Sport proved to be exceptional.

After stepping up from the MINI CHALLENGE Trophy, the 17-year-old immediately adapted to the faster machinery and began winning from the opening weekend at Donington Park.

That momentum continued throughout the year.

By the time the championship reached Silverstone, Garford had built an advantage large enough to secure the title with a meeting still remaining.

He ended 2026 with:

18 victories from 20 races
2 second places
20 podiums from 20 starts
Never lower than second
2026 JCW Sport Champion

Beyond the statistics, the season represented another significant step in Alfie’s development.

His speed was clear from the opening round, but as the season progressed he added greater consistency, race management and confidence when dealing with championship pressure.

Having previously won British championships in both junior and senior karting, Alfie has now added a major car racing championship to his CV.

Plans for 2027 are already being worked on, with both driver and team looking towards another significant step forward.

MURRAY RICHARDSON – JCW SPORT VICE-CHAMPION

For Richardson, 2026 represented his first full season of car racing – making his eventual championship result even more impressive.

Murray developed considerably as the year progressed, becoming increasingly competitive with his more experienced teammate and taking two JCW Sport victories of his own.

His Silverstone Race 3 victory was arguably one of the highlights of his season.

After making a rare mistake earlier in the day, Murray responded superbly in difficult wet conditions while running on slick tyres.

He and Alfie produced a captivating battle for the lead, with the television cameras following the teammates as they traded moves throughout the race.

Murray ultimately produced a brilliant switchback from the final corner to gain the momentum required to beat Alfie to the line.

It demonstrated not only his outright pace but the racecraft and resilience he had developed throughout the season.

Ending his first full campaign as JCW Sport Championship runner-up, with race wins, fastest laps and regular podium finishes, gives Richardson a strong platform from which to build.

PETE OSBORNE – TEAM PRINCIPAL

Pete Osborne said:

“When we look back at the season, I’m incredibly proud of what both drivers have achieved.

“With Alfie, the numbers are exceptional. Eighteen wins from twenty races and never finishing lower than second shows the level of performance and consistency he’s reached.

“But we’ve seen development beyond simply becoming faster. His understanding of races, technical feedback, decision-making and ability to deal with pressure have all moved forward significantly.

“He’s now won British championships in karting and cars and I think he’s demonstrated that he’s ready for another challenge. We’re already working hard on the next step and we’re setting our sights high.

“Murray’s progression has been equally rewarding to watch. You have to remember this has been his first complete season of car racing.

“At the beginning of the year he was learning almost everything. By the end of it he was capable of genuinely taking the fight to Alfie, winning races and setting fastest laps.

“Silverstone probably summed that development up perfectly. He made a rare mistake in one race, reset himself and then produced one of his best drives of the season a few hours later.

“That’s exactly what development is about.

“They’ve also been very good for each other. Alfie has given Murray an extremely high benchmark to work towards, while Murray’s increasing pace has continued to push Alfie.

“They share data and information away from the circuit, but once they’re on track they’re racers and they both want to win.

“For Wera Alliance Racing Academy to finish the season first and second in the championship and to have won every JCW Sport race between the two cars is something everyone involved should be extremely proud of.”

ALFIE GARFORD

Garford added:

“It’s been an unbelievable season.

“Winning the championship was obviously the biggest moment, but probably my favourite race was the final one at Silverstone with Murray. We were on slicks in the wet, racing side-by-side and throwing moves at each other, and the TV cameras really picked up on it.

“That was just proper racing and I loved it.

“Then going to Brands with the championship already won and taking three wins was the perfect way to finish the season.

“I’m really proud of the 18 wins, but finishing all 20 races inside the top two probably means just as much because it shows the consistency we’ve had all year.

“A massive thank you to everyone at Alliance, the Academy and all the partners who make it possible.

“We’re already working on next year. Nothing is confirmed yet, but we’re aiming high and I definitely feel ready for the next challenge.”

MURRAY RICHARDSON

Richardson said:

“When I look back at where I started the season compared with where I finished it, I think I’ve made a massive step forward.

“I’ve learned so much from the team and also from having Alfie alongside me. He’s set an incredibly high benchmark all year and that’s forced me to keep improving.

“The Silverstone win is probably the moment that stands out most. After making a mistake earlier in the day, to come back and have that battle with Alfie and then win it with the move out of the final corner was a great feeling.

“Finishing second in the championship in my first full season is something I’m really proud of, but it’s also made me hungry for more.

“Brands was a great way to finish with three one-twos and taking fastest lap in Race 2. Now it’s about taking everything I’ve learned this year and using it for the next step.”

Wera Alliance Racing Academy secures the JCW Sport title at Silverstone before Garford and Richardson produce one of the races of the season

Silverstone proved to be a landmark weekend for the Wera Alliance Racing Academy as Alfie Garford secured the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship, while teammate Murray Richardson responded to an uncharacteristic mistake with a superb victory in a thrilling wet-weather battle between the pair.

It was a weekend that showcased two very different sides of motorsport development.

For Garford, it was the reward for a season of exceptional consistency and race-winning performance.

For Richardson, it demonstrated resilience, raw pace and the confidence to fight back immediately from disappointment.

And when the championship pressure was finally removed, the two Academy drivers produced a spectacular head-to-head battle that became one of the standout moments of the Silverstone weekend.

RACE ONE – GARFORD SECURES THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The opening race of the weekend carried major championship implications.

Garford once again delivered at the front of JCW Sport, taking another class victory and placing himself in position to secure the title with races still remaining in the season.

Behind him, Richardson was pushing hard as he looked to keep the championship contest alive.

In a rare error during what has otherwise been an impressively consistent rookie campaign, Murray pushed the limits into Turn 1 and found himself in the gravel.

The resulting DNF brought his race to a premature end and, combined with Alfie’s victory, mathematically confirmed Garford as the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Champion.

It was the culmination of a remarkable campaign for the #88 driver, who has combined outright pace with exceptional consistency throughout his first season in JCW Sport machinery.

For Garford and the Academy, the championship was secured.

For Richardson, attention immediately turned towards responding in the next race.

RACE TWO – NO CHAMPIONSHIP PRESSURE, NO HOLDING BACK

With the title decided, Race Two produced something very different.

Conditions were difficult, with the circuit wet while the JCW Sport cars remained on slick tyres.

Rather than simply managing their way through the race, Garford and Richardson put on a show.

The two Academy teammates diced repeatedly for the lead, trading moves, lunges, slipstreams and committed overtaking attempts as they explored the limits of grip around the Silverstone National circuit.

At times they ran nose-to-tail; at others side-by-side.

Neither driver was prepared to give the other an inch.

As the contest developed, the television coverage increasingly turned its attention towards the two Wera Alliance cars as their fight became one of the most captivating battles on circuit.

It was a superb demonstration of controlled aggression from two young drivers racing each other hard but fairly.

Every braking zone offered an opportunity.

Every corner exit became a chance to build a run.

And with slick tyres on a wet circuit, both drivers were constantly balancing outright attack against the very real possibility of exceeding the available grip.

The battle remained alive right until the final corner of the final lap.

Garford appeared to have the advantage approaching the finish, but Richardson positioned the #8 car perfectly.

Murray executed an excellent switchback out of the final corner, cutting underneath Alfie and carrying the stronger exit onto the straight.

The move gave him the momentum he needed.

Using the slipstream and the superior run to the line, Richardson completed the pass to take a brilliant JCW Sport victory.

It was an outstanding end to an exceptional race.

For Murray, it was the perfect response to the disappointment of Race One.

For Alfie, the result came only hours after becoming champion and after playing his part in a race that demonstrated exactly why the two Academy drivers have been so strong throughout 2026.

TWO DRIVERS, ONE ACADEMY

The Silverstone weekend encapsulated what the Wera Alliance Racing Academy programme is designed to achieve.

Garford arrived as championship leader and left as champion.

Richardson suffered one of the rare mistakes of his season but immediately responded by producing arguably one of his strongest drives of the year.

And when the two were given the opportunity to race freely, they demonstrated pace, racecraft, confidence and mutual respect.

Throughout the season, Alfie and Murray have worked closely together away from the circuit, sharing data and feedback while continually pushing one another forward.

At Silverstone, that relationship was displayed publicly.

They may be teammates, but once the lights went out there was no shortage of competition.

The result was a race that showcased both drivers at their best.

ALFIE GARFORD | #88

“Winning the championship is an amazing feeling. It’s been the target all season, but you still have to keep delivering every weekend and make sure you don’t get ahead of yourself.

“Once I crossed the line after Race One and knew we’d done enough, it was a massive moment. The whole team has worked incredibly hard for this and they’ve given me a brilliant car all season.

“Murray’s DNF obviously meant the championship was confirmed there and then, but he’s pushed me hard all year. We’ve both helped each other improve and that’s been a big part of why the Academy has been so strong.

“Race Two was probably some of the most fun I’ve had in a race car this year. We were on slicks with a wet circuit and Murray and I were just going for it. There were lunges, switchbacks, slipstreams and plenty of moments where either of us could have come out on top.

“We were racing hard but there was trust between us as well. I knew Murray would race fairly and I think he knew the same about me.

“He got the move absolutely right out of the final corner. I thought I had him, but he switched back, got the better exit and had the run to the line.

“Obviously I always want to win, but after clinching the championship in Race One it was great to be able to race like that and put on a show.

“To leave Silverstone as champion and after a race like that is something I’ll remember for a long time.”

MURRAY RICHARDSON | #8

“Race One was frustrating because it was my mistake. I was pushing the limits into Turn 1, went that little bit too far and ended up in the gravel.

“Mistakes happen in racing, but the important thing is how you respond to them.

“I knew I had the pace and I wanted to come back strongly in Race Two.

“The conditions made it really exciting because we were on slicks on a wet circuit, so you were constantly searching for grip and trying to work out where you could attack.

“Alfie and I had a brilliant fight. We know each other well, we understand how each other races and that means we can fight really hard while still having respect for each other.

“There were a few sends from both of us, plenty of slipstreaming and the lead could have gone either way.

“Coming into the final corner I knew I needed to try something different. I let Alfie take his line, switched back underneath him and concentrated on getting the best possible exit.

“When I realised I’d got the run and could get alongside before the line, it was a great feeling.

“To bounce back from Race One with a win like that made it even sweeter.

“Congratulations to Alfie as well. He’s had an unbelievable season and fully deserves the championship. Hopefully we’ve shown this weekend just how strong the Academy has been this year.”

PETE OSBORNE | TEAM PRINCIPAL

“Silverstone summed up exactly what we’re trying to achieve with the Academy.

“Firstly, Alfie becoming champion is a huge achievement. His results speak for themselves, but what I’m most pleased with is how complete a driver he’s becoming.

“He’s quick, he’s consistent, he understands races and he’s learned how to manage a championship. That’s a major part of driver development and he’s handled it extremely well.

“Murray had a rare mistake in Race One. He was pushing the limits into Turn 1 and unfortunately ended up in the gravel.

“But young drivers will make mistakes. What matters enormously to me is the response, and his response was outstanding.

“Race Two was fantastic.

“The circuit was wet, they were both on slicks and neither of them wanted to give the other anything. They were attacking, defending, using the slipstream, trying different lines and constantly looking for opportunities.

“It became a proper motor race.

“The television cameras picked up on it because it was probably one of the most entertaining battles on the circuit.

“I was particularly impressed with the way they raced each other. It was aggressive, but there was respect there too.

“Murray’s switchback out of the final corner was excellent racecraft. He realised he wasn’t going to win the drag race from where he was, changed the approach, prioritised the exit and created the run he needed to the line.

“That isn’t just speed. That’s thinking about the race.

“Alfie could have easily backed off after winning the championship, but that’s not his nature either. He wanted to win and that helped create the spectacle we saw.

“For me, seeing one of our drivers secure the championship and then watching the two of them put on a race like that is incredibly rewarding.

“It’s a great advert for both drivers, for Wera Alliance Racing Academy and for what we’re trying to build here.”

MORE THAN JUST THE RESULT

While Garford’s championship will rightly headline the Silverstone weekend, Race Two may ultimately prove just as important from a driver-development perspective.

The Academy programme is about much more than producing results.

It is about developing racecraft, decision-making, resilience and the ability to perform under pressure.

Silverstone demonstrated all of those qualities.

Garford delivered when a championship was on the line and converted his season-long advantage into the title.

Richardson made a rare mistake, accepted it and responded immediately with an exceptional performance.

Then, with championship pressure removed, the pair provided a demonstration of close racing that captured the attention of the television coverage and those watching around the circuit.

Two teammates.

Two different stages of the weekend.

One Academy.

And a Silverstone weekend that demonstrated just how far both drivers have progressed during 2026.

A Scottish clean sweep for the Wera Academy at Knockhill

A COMMANDING WEEKEND IN FIFE

Wera Alliance Racing Academy celebrated another commanding weekend in the Power Maxed MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport championship as Alfie Garford and Murray Richardson secured a qualifying one-two before completing three consecutive one-two finishes at Knockhill.

The fifth meeting of the season — incorporating rounds 12, 13 and 14 — provided almost every challenge Scotland could offer. While much of the country enjoyed summer sunshine, Knockhill delivered rapidly changing conditions, difficult tyre decisions and a fully wet second race.

Through it all, Garford and Richardson demonstrated impressive speed, maturity and teamwork. Their performances also offered another indication that both young drivers have the potential to compete for strong overall positions in the full JCW field as they continue their development towards 2027.

SERIOUS PACE IN QUALIFYING

Saturday’s qualifying session provided the first clear sign of the Academy’s pace. Garford put the #88 MINI on JCW Sport pole with a 57.668-second lap, while Richardson completed an all-Wera front row in the #8 car.

Both drivers backed up their fastest times with strong second-fastest laps, securing the same starting order for the weekend’s final race. More significant than the class one-two was the continuing reduction in the gap to the more powerful JCW cars.

Around Knockhill’s short, fast and unforgiving 1.27-mile layout, both Academy drivers showed confidence and commitment, using the circuit knowledge gained during midweek testing to good effect. The performance gave the team plenty of encouragement about their ability to race competitively within the main JCW pack next season.

RACE ONE | MURRAY’S SCOTTISH WEATHER GAMBLE

Conditions created a major strategic decision ahead of Saturday’s opening race. Rain had fallen earlier, but the circuit was drying and most of the field committed to slick tyres.

Richardson and the team took a bold gamble by fitting wet tyres, hoping another shower would arrive during the race. Initially, the decision looked inspired. While the slick-shod cars struggled to generate temperature, Murray attacked the opening laps with confidence and briefly raised the exciting possibility of challenging much further into the overall JCW order.

An overall victory for a JCW Sport car would have been an extraordinary and unheard-of result. Unfortunately, the expected rain stayed away. As the surface continued to dry, the wet tyres overheated and Murray’s early advantage disappeared. In a final twist typical of Knockhill, the rain returned almost as the chequered flag was shown — only a few minutes too late to reward the gamble.

Garford remained on slicks and managed the changing conditions to secure the first JCW Sport victory of the weekend, with Richardson bringing the #8 car home second. Although the strategy did not ultimately pay off, it demonstrated the ambition running through the Academy: a calculated attempt to achieve something exceptional.

RACE TWO | STAYING AFLOAT

Sunday’s opening contest was held on a fully wet circuit, presenting a completely different challenge. Standing water, limited visibility and constantly changing grip levels made simply keeping the cars on the track an achievement.

Garford delivered a controlled performance in the #88 car, judging the available grip and avoiding the incidents that caught out several competitors. He secured his second class win of the weekend and extended his championship advantage.

Richardson also produced a composed drive in extremely difficult conditions. With the car moving beneath him and visibility reduced by spray, Murray concentrated on bringing the MINI home while continuing to build valuable wet-weather experience. He crossed the line second in JCW Sport, completing another Wera Alliance Academy one-two on a race in which there had been little margin for error.

RACE THREE | MIDWEEK PREPARATION PAYS OFF

The circuit was dry for the final race, allowing both drivers to demonstrate the outright pace developed during their pre-event test. Garford and Richardson immediately settled into a confident rhythm and comfortably controlled the JCW Sport contest.

Their consistency through Knockhill’s high-speed direction changes, the compression at Duffus Dip and the demanding run through the chicane showed how effectively they had converted their testing data into race performance.

Garford’s best lap of 57.835 seconds secured the JCW Sport fastest lap alongside his third victory of the weekend. Richardson recorded a 58.919 and completed the Academy’s third consecutive one-two finish.

Both drivers were able to lap at a pace increasingly comparable with cars from the full JCW category. On a circuit where even a small time difference is magnified by the short lap, their performance was another important measure of the progress made during the season.

Garford therefore completed a perfect hat-trick of class victories at his first visit to Knockhill, while Richardson added three second-place finishes to a weekend that showcased his growing speed, confidence and willingness to make ambitious strategic calls.

CHAMPIONSHIP POSITION

The Knockhill results take Garford’s season total to 13 JCW Sport victories from the opening 14 races. He leaves Scotland leading the championship with 757 points.

Richardson remains second on 567 points after strengthening his position with three further podium finishes. The two Wera Alliance Academy drivers also hold first and second in the JCW Sport Rookie Cup, where Garford leads Richardson by 124 points.

DRIVER COMMENTS

ALFIE GARFORD | CAR #88

“It’s been a mega first weekend at Knockhill. Qualifying on pole and taking three wins is a fantastic result, but the biggest positive for me was the pace we showed across every type of condition.”

“The wet race was especially challenging because there was so little grip, so it was about staying calm and making sure we brought the result home. In the final race, we could really use everything we learned during the test and the car felt strong.”

“Murray kept pushing all weekend and that helps both of us continue improving. The gap to the JCW cars is something we’re watching closely, and weekends like this give us a lot of confidence about where we could be next year.”

MURRAY RICHARDSON | CAR #8

“The wet-tyre decision in race one was a gamble, but for the opening laps it genuinely felt like it might work. If the rain had arrived a little earlier, it could have produced an unbelievable result. Instead, it arrived as the race finished, which was frustrating, but that is sometimes how racing goes.”

“Race two was about surviving some extremely slippery conditions and bringing the car home. It was good experience and another strong result for the team.”

“The final race was the most enjoyable because we could put our testing knowledge into practice and show our true pace. Three second places is a positive weekend, and I feel like I’m continuing to move forward every time I get in the car.”

TEAM PRINCIPAL COMMENTS

PETE OSBORNE | TEAM PRINCIPAL

“This was another extremely encouraging weekend for both drivers. Alfie delivered three very controlled victories and showed why he is leading the championship, while Murray demonstrated speed, bravery and a willingness to take an opportunity when it presented itself.”

“The wet-tyre gamble in race one was ambitious, but for a time it looked like it could create something very special. Had the rain arrived a few minutes earlier, we could have been talking about a JCW Sport car challenging for an overall win.”

“What impressed me most was the pace both boys showed relative to the JCW field. They are still developing, but they are learning quickly and pushing each other forward. Their performances at Knockhill showed that both have the potential to fight for serious overall positions as they take the next step in their careers.”

“It was a complete team effort in very difficult conditions, and everyone involved can be proud of three one-two finishes in Scotland.”

LOOKING AHEAD

The Wera Alliance Academy now has a seven-week break before the penultimate meeting of the season at Silverstone National on 26–27 September.

Garford will arrive looking to consolidate his commanding championship advantage, while Richardson will aim to convert his growing speed into further victories as he works to secure second in the standings.

With just Silverstone and the Brands Hatch Grand Prix finale remaining, the focus will be on completing a highly successful JCW Sport campaign while continuing to prepare both young drivers for the next stage of their development.

Wera Alliance Academy duo showcase speed, resilience and growing potential in Round 4 of the MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship

Round 4 of the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship at Oulton Park delivered a weekend of contrasting fortunes for the Wera Alliance Academy pairing of Alfie Garford and Murray Richardson, but ultimately highlighted the strength of the team’s driver programme as Richardson secured a breakthrough maiden victory while Garford battled through significant mechanical issues to salvage valuable championship points.

Competing in mixed conditions around one of Britain’s most demanding circuits, both drivers arrived at Oulton Park eager to continue their development in the fiercely competitive JCW Sport category. By the end of the weekend, there was plenty to celebrate within the Wera Alliance Academy camp.

Richardson takes a major step forward

The standout story of the weekend came from Murray Richardson, who produced his strongest performance since stepping into the JCW ranks at the start of the season.

Showing impressive pace from the outset, Richardson made a significant leap forward throughout testing before carrying that momentum into qualifying. His reward was a breakthrough class pole position, the first of his JCW Sport career, underlining the progress he has made during the opening half of the season.

Richardson converted that speed into a series of highly competitive race performances, culminating in a superb maiden JCW Sport victory. Throughout the weekend he demonstrated improved confidence, racecraft and consistency, regularly finding himself fighting at the front of the class.

The result marks a major milestone in Richardson’s development and provides further evidence of the progress being made within the Wera Alliance Academy programme.

Garford refuses to give in

While Richardson enjoyed a breakthrough weekend, championship leader Alfie Garford was forced to overcome a series of frustrating setbacks.

A gearbox issue struck at the worst possible moment and prevented Garford from posting a representative qualifying time, leaving him on the back foot before the racing had even begun.

Unfortunately, the problem continued into Race One where the #88 MINI was left without the use of third gear, significantly compromising performance around the flowing Oulton Park circuit.

Despite the obvious disadvantage, Garford produced a determined drive to limit the damage and collect valuable championship points. As the team worked tirelessly throughout the weekend, the reigning Trophy Rookie Champion continued to fight his way forward whenever opportunities presented themselves.

Although the results sheet may not fully reflect his pace, Garford’s determination and refusal to give up highlighted the maturity that has helped establish him as one of the leading young talents in the championship.

Friendly rivalry driving both drivers forward

One of the biggest positives to emerge from Oulton Park was the increasingly competitive dynamic developing between the two Wera Alliance Academy drivers.

With Richardson now securing his first pole position and victory, and Garford continuing to set the benchmark within the team, both drivers are pushing each other to new levels.

The healthy rivalry is creating an environment where both youngsters are constantly improving, something the team believes will pay significant dividends as the season progresses.

As confidence grows within the Richardson camp and Garford looks to bounce back from a challenging weekend, the prospect of regular battles between the pair is becoming an exciting storyline within the JCW Sport category.

Driver Quotes

Murray Richardson

“Coming away with my first pole position and first win in JCW Sport is a really special feeling. We’ve worked hard all season and I feel like everything started to click this weekend. My confidence grew every session and I felt comfortable fighting at the front. Huge thanks to everyone at Wera Alliance Academy for giving me a fantastic car. Hopefully this is the first of many.”

Alfie Garford

“It wasn’t the weekend we wanted after the gearbox issues put us on the back foot from qualifying onwards. Losing third gear in Race One made things incredibly difficult, but the team worked non-stop and we kept fighting for every point available. Congratulations to Murray as well – he’s taken a massive step forward this weekend and it’s great to see the hard work paying off.”

Team Principal Pete Osborne

“Oulton Park showed exactly what this programme is about. Murray has been building towards this result for a while and to see him take his first pole and first win is fantastic. His confidence has grown massively and he’s proving he belongs at the front.

“For Alfie, it was a weekend of damage limitation. The gearbox issue was unfortunate and obviously affected his qualifying and Race One, but he never stopped fighting. The maturity he showed was excellent.

“What excites me most is seeing both drivers pushing each other. Competition within the team is healthy and I genuinely believe the battles we’re starting to see between them will help develop two very talented young drivers.”

Looking Ahead

The championship now heads into the summer break before reconvening north of the border at Knockhill for Round 5.

With Richardson carrying momentum from his breakthrough weekend and Garford eager to return to winning ways, the Wera Alliance Academy squad will head to Scotland confident of continuing their strong campaign in the MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship.

Wera Alliance duo deliver under pressure at Snetterton

Round 3 – Snetterton 300 | MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport | 23/24 May 2026

The Wera Alliance Racing Academy arrived at Snetterton for Round 3 of the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE with momentum, expectation and two young drivers continuing to build their reputations in the JCW Sport class.

Following strong showings at Donington and Brands Hatch, the pairing of Murray Richardson #8 & Alfie Garford #88 – quickly becoming known around the paddock as Murfie – headed into the Norfolk weekend ready for another test.

And Snetterton delivered exactly that. Across three races on the long, fast and technical 300 layout, both drivers had to battle more than just the stopwatch. With hot, dry weather beating down across the weekend, cockpit temperatures rose, tyres were pushed hard, and concentration became just as important as outright pace.

For Garford, it was another weekend of calm execution and front-running control in the Sport Rookie class. For Richardson, it was another important step forward – with clear improvements, stronger pace and valuable race mileage in only his early stages of JCW Sport competition.

BUILD-UP – FROM MOMENTUM TO MANAGEMENT

Snetterton is very different to Donington and Brands Hatch. Long straights, heavy braking zones and technical sequences mean the car has to be balanced, the driver has to be patient, and mistakes can cost huge chunks of time.

For Garford, the aim was to keep stacking results and protect the momentum he had built over the opening two rounds. He arrived with confidence, but also with the pressure that comes from being the benchmark in the Sport Rookie class.

Richardson’s objective was equally important. After showing flashes of speed and bravery at Brands Hatch, particularly during the wet-weather Race 3 battle, Snetterton was about turning that confidence into consistency. In the heat, over a full race distance, there was nowhere to hide – unless you count hiding in a MINI cockpit slowly turning into a greenhouse.

QUALIFYING – SPORT ROOKIE BATTLE SET

Qualifying took place in sunny, dry conditions, giving both Wera Alliance drivers a clear opportunity to set the tone for the weekend.

Garford led the Sport Rookie classification, placing the #88 Wera Alliance MINI 1st in Sport, with a best lap of 2:10.203. Richardson backed that up with 2nd in Sport, recording a 2:11.829 as he continued to build confidence around the long Snetterton lap.

The second-fastest qualifying times, used for later grid setting, kept the same Sport order: Garford remained 1st with a 2:11.180, while Richardson was 2nd on a 2:12.325.

It gave Wera Alliance a clear platform: Garford with the class benchmark, Richardson close enough to keep learning, chasing and applying pressure.

RACE 1 – RICHARDSON BANKS STRONG MILEAGE, WHILE GARFORD CONVERTS

Race 1 was about survival as much as speed. With the track bright and dry, and the field tightly packed, Garford delivered exactly what was needed. Starting deep in the overall order among the mixed JCW field, he kept the race clean, controlled the Sport contest and brought the car home 1st, setting a best lap of 2:10.972.

Richardson also made important progress. He finished 2nd in Sport, gaining race mileage and producing his best lap late in the race with a 2:13.209 on lap nine, showing that he was still pushing and still improving even as the heat and tyre degradation made life tougher.

For Garford, it was another composed class win. For Richardson, it was a disciplined finish and another step in the right direction. The result was a solid Wera Alliance one-two in Sport Rookie – the sort of tidy team result that looks simple on paper but is anything but in a boiling hot race car.

RACE 2 – RICHARDSON LEADS EARLY, GARFORD TAKES CONTROL

Race 2 gave Richardson one of his strongest moments of the weekend. The #8 Wera Alliance MINI made an excellent early impression, leading the Sport class on the opening lap before Garford took over from lap two onwards. It was a small but important marker – proof that Richardson’s confidence and reaction in race conditions were moving forward quickly.

There was frustration too, with Richardson receiving a five-second penalty for an out-of-position start, but he still completed the race 2nd in Sport, setting a best lap of 2:12.914.

Garford then settled into his rhythm and managed the class battle with maturity. He finished 1st in Sport, recording a best lap of 2:11.586, again delivering the kind of controlled performance that has become a theme of his early JCW Sport campaign.

It was another strong two-car result: Richardson showing sharper race instinct and Garford showing the calm execution needed to keep a championship campaign moving.

RACE 3 – HOT TRACK, HARD WORK, AND MORE PROGRESSION

By Race 3, the weekend had become a real physical test. The final race was again run in sunny, dry conditions, and after two previous races the drivers were dealing with heat, fatigue and the constant demand of the Snetterton 300 layout. The long lap gives no real rest – fast straights, heavy stops, technical corners, then back to doing it all again while the cockpit cooks you like Sunday dinner.

Garford produced his fastest race lap of the weekend in the finale, setting a 2:09.645 on lap seven and 1st in JCW Sport. It was his sharpest race pace of the event and another example of how he can still find more as the weekend develops.

Richardson also found a clear gain, recording his best race lap of the weekend with a 2:11.798 and finishing 2nd in Sport. That improvement mattered. Across the races, his best laps moved from the 2:13s into the 2:11s, showing genuine adaptation and a better understanding of how to extract performance from the JCW Sport car.

Garford again delivered the result. Richardson again delivered progress. Together, they gave Wera Alliance another strong class finish and more evidence that the Murfie pairing is becoming a serious asset for the team.

DRIVER COMMENT – ALFIE GARFORD #88

Alfie Garford #88 “Really happy with the weekend overall. Snetterton was a proper challenge, especially with the heat in the car, but the team gave me a strong car and we kept getting the job done. The main thing was staying consistent, keeping it clean and taking the points when they were there. It is easy to make mistakes when it is that hot and the tyres start moving around, so I am pleased with how we managed it. Murray was pushing on as well, and it is good for both of us because we are always learning from each other and pushing the team forward.”

DRIVER COMMENT – MURRAY RICHARDSON #8

Murray Richardson #8 “It was a hard weekend physically, probably one of the toughest so far with the heat, but I feel like I made another good step. There were a few things to tidy up, especially Race 2, but the pace improved through the weekend and I felt much more comfortable by Race 3. Getting the lap time down and understanding the car better was the big positive. Alfie is obviously setting a strong benchmark, so having him there gives me something to chase. I am learning every time I go out, and Snetterton felt like another proper step forward.”

Round 2 – Brands Hatch Indy | MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport

Round 2 of the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport Championship brought Wera Alliance Racing Academy to the unforgiving Brands Hatch Indy circuit — another packed BTCC weekend played out in front of huge crowds and live ITV4 coverage.

Following a dream debut weekend at Donington Park, expectations were high for both Alfie Garford (#88) and Murray Richardson (#8).

What followed was another headline-grabbing weekend for the team — combining front-running pace, intense wheel-to-wheel battles and rapidly growing confidence from both drivers.

BUILD-UP – MOMENTUM ARRIVES AT BRANDS

Brands Hatch Indy is one of the shortest and most unforgiving circuits on the calendar. Tiny mistakes become massive instantly — especially through the dramatic drop of Paddock Hill Bend.

Garford arrived carrying championship momentum after his dominant Donington clean sweep, while Richardson entered the weekend full of confidence after major progression during Round 1.

QUALIFYING – BOTH DRIVERS IN THE FIGHT

Richardson once again showed impressive pace early in the weekend, looking increasingly confident around the fast-flowing Indy layout and firmly establishing himself amongst the leading JCW Sport runners.

Garford meanwhile maintained the form that had made him the benchmark driver at Donington, again putting himself right at the front of the field with another strong qualifying performance.

RACE 1 – RICHARDSON IMPRESSES, GARFORD DELIVERS

Richardson produced one of his strongest drives yet in JCW Sport, showing increased confidence and aggression in wheel-to-wheel combat while running competitively throughout the race.

At the front, Garford remained calm and composed around the tight Indy layout, once again delivering a major result and continuing his exceptional early-season form.

RACE 2 – HARD LESSONS AND BIG POINTS

Race 2 brought disappointment for Richardson after carrying slightly too much speed into Paddock Hill Bend on cold tyres, sliding into the gravel and becoming beached early in the race.

While frustrating, the incident highlighted the unforgiving nature of Brands Hatch and served as an important learning moment during only his second JCW Sport weekend.

Garford meanwhile continued delivering at the front, absorbing pressure and securing another major points haul in difficult, frantic conditions.

RACE 3 – INTENSE WET WEATHER TEAM BATTLE

Rain before the final race transformed Brands Hatch into a low-grip challenge, with standing water, slippery kerbs and poor visibility forcing drivers onto wet tyres. In the difficult conditions, Richardson delivered arguably his most impressive performance yet in JCW Sport machinery.

The rookie immediately looked comfortable in the wet and found himself locked in an intense battle with teammate Garford throughout the race.

The pair swapped positions several times in a thrilling fight, with Richardson even taking the lead from Garford during the race as both drivers pushed the limits of grip around the soaked Indy circuit.

Garford ultimately responded with the composure and racecraft that has defined his season so far, but the battle highlighted just how rapidly Richardson is progressing at the sharp end of the field.

DRIVER COMMENTS

“There’s loads to take from the weekend. The pace felt really strong and I’m definitely getting more comfortable every session. Race 3 in the wet was mega fun and battling properly with Alfie was a massive confidence boost.” – Murray Richardson“Brands Hatch is always intense because everything happens so quickly, especially in the wet. The racing was hard but fair all weekend and the team gave us another brilliant car.” – Alfie Garford

TEAM PRINCIPAL – PETE OSBORNE

“Overall this has been another extremely strong weekend for the team. Alfie continued exactly where he left off at Donington — fast, calm and consistently delivering results under pressure. But I’m equally pleased with Murray’s development. His pace this weekend was genuinely impressive and Race 3 especially showed just how quickly he’s progressing. To battle that hard with Alfie in wet conditions around Brands Hatch says a lot about his confidence and ability.

The Race 2 incident is simply part of the learning curve. Brands Hatch punishes tiny mistakes, especially on cold tyres, but Murray responded exactly how we wanted him to afterwards.”

SUMMARY

Round 2 reinforced the growing strength of the Wera Alliance Racing Academy line-up.Garford continued his outstanding start to the season with another front-running weekend, while Richardson showed major progression, including an impressive wet-weather performance and intense battles at the front. Two rounds into the season, momentum is building rapidly.

NEXT ROUND – SNETTERTON

The championship now heads to Snetterton in a fortnight’s time on May 23–24, where ‘Murfie’ will look to continue their impressive starts to the 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport season. With Garford continuing his championship challenge and Richardson rapidly closing the gap at the front, Wera Alliance Racing Academy arrive carrying serious momentum.

The 2026 MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport season burst into life at Donington Park on the BTCC stage, with packed grandstands, a busy paddock and live ITV4 coverage.

For Alfie Garford (#88) and Murray Richardson (#8), this marked a major step up into JCW Sport. Across the weekend, both drivers delivered — combining outright performance at the front with rapid development and consistency.

BUILD-UP

Garford arrived with momentum following a championship-winning season, targeting an immediate impact at the front of the field. Alongside him, Richardson entered the weekend focused on learning quickly and building confidence in a highly competitive class.

The objective was clear — deliver results while maximising progression — and both drivers executed their roles perfectly.

QUALIFYING – FRONT ROW LOCKOUT

Both drivers delivered standout performances in qualifying. Richardson impressed with a composed and precise lap to secure a front-row start in his first JCW Sport session, immediately establishing himself at the sharp end.

Garford then went one better, committing to a high-attack lap to secure pole position, completing a Wera Alliance front row lockout and putting the team firmly in control heading into Race 1.

RACE 1 – STRONG START ON BOTH FRONTS

Garford converted pole position into a controlled lights-to-flag victory, managing the race from the front with precision, pace and composure. Behind, Richardson delivered an equally important performance, handling the pressure of a debut race start, maintaining position and racing intelligently to secure a strong points finish.

While Garford set the benchmark at the front, Richardson laid the foundation for his weekend with a clean, confident and disciplined drive.

RACE 2 – CONSISTENCY AND PROGRESSION

Race 2 saw both drivers build on their Race 1 performances. Garford remained clinical at the front, absorbing pressure and delivering another controlled drive to secure his second victory of the weekend.

Richardson showed clear progression, becoming more confident in wheel-to-wheel situations and reducing the gap to the leading group. His increased pace and assertiveness highlighted how quickly he was adapting to the demands of JCW Sport.Together, the pair demonstrated both ends of the performance spectrum — winning pace and rapid development.

RACE 3 – COMPLETE TEAM PERFORMANCE

With the reverse grid in play, Race 3 demanded patience and racecraft. Garford delivered both, working methodically through the field to complete a perfect three wins from three races — a flawless debut weekend.

Richardson capped off his weekend with his strongest drive yet, combining confidence and consistency to secure another solid finish. Fully settled into the car, his performance underlined a steep and impressive learning curve.

The final race encapsulated the weekend — dominance at the front and clear progression just behind it.

DRIVER COMMENTS

“To come into JCW Sport and take three wins is unreal. The team gave me a mega car all weekend and we executed everything perfectly.” – Alfie Garford

“Massive step up this weekend. I improved every session and by the final race I felt confident pushing properly. A strong base to build from.” – Murray Richardson

TEAM PRINCIPAL – PETE OSBORNE

“This has been an excellent opening weekend for the team. Alfie has delivered exactly what we know he’s capable of — fast, composed and clinical at the front.

But just as importantly, Murray’s progression has been extremely impressive. To come into a new class and improve every time he went out, while delivering consistent results, shows real quality.
What we’ve seen this weekend is the balance we want — performance and progression. That puts us in a very strong position moving forward.”

SUMMARY

Garford: 3 wins from 3 races — perfect debut.
Richardson: Front row start, consistent finishes and rapid improvement.
A complete team performance combining immediate success and long-term potential.

NEXT ROUND – BRANDS HATCH
Round 2 takes place at Brands Hatch (May 8–10), where both drivers will look to build on a strong opening weekend.

Alliance Racing is pleased to announce the signing of Alfie Garford and Murray Richardson for the 2026 season racing in the MINI Challenge JCW Sport class. They will be racing under the Wera Alliance Racing Academy banner.

After a breakthrough debut season in the MINI Challenge Trophy class Alfie gets the chance to test his skills in the faster JCW Sport class in 2026.

Alfie had this to say about making the step up and his hopes for the coming season.

“Looking ahead to 2026, the focus is firmly on taking the next big step forward with a move into the highly competitive JCW Sport category. It’s a formidable challenge, but exactly the kind of environment that pushes drivers to raise every aspect of their performance — and one I’m hugely excited to take on.

Continuing with the Wera Tools / Alliance Racing Academy for another season is a massive part of that journey. The academy has been central to my development so far, and having that familiar structure, support network, and shared mindset behind me again provides the perfect platform to tackle a new level of competition with confidence.

Joining me on that step up will be my 2025 team-mate and close sparring partner, Murray Richardson. Having raced closely together, pushing each other throughout the season, it’s exciting to take that rivalry into a new championship where we can continue to challenge, learn, and drive each other forward.

2026 represents more than just a new category — it’s the next phase of progression, surrounded by the right people, in the right environment, with the aim of competing at the sharp end and continuing to build toward long-term success.”

Murray, on the other hand, is only in his second ever season racing cars and comes off an impressive debut season in the MINI Challenge Trophy class that saw him building on his results and honing his race craft over the season that culminated in a victory at the Donington Park GP round of the championship.

Murray had this to say about his hopes for the season ahead and continuing his racing development in the Wera Alliance Racing Academy.

“I am extremely excited and grateful to grow and continue my journey with Wera in the Mini Challenge and I’m looking forward to pushing myself to new heights off the back of last year’s results in the trophy class! The aim for this year is to podium twice and hopefully secure a win! I can’t wait to show the talents of myself and the team by bringing home as much silverware as possible to make them proud!”

Alliance Racing team owner and Wera Alliance Racing Academy co-founder, Pete Osborne, had this to say about the signings

“With thanks to Wera tools, we’re delighted to continue our journey with both Alfie and Murray. They both had breakthrough seasons last year as team-mates in the Wera Alliance Racing Academy and worked really well as team-mates, so its great to keep them together as a team and progress their development by moving into the MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport class.

“Like most of the drivers in the academy they’re at the early part of their careers, so we get to help them grow, both as racing drivers and as young men, and the fact they get to share these experiences is something I believe is very important to their ongoing development.

“The step up to the Vertu MINI CHALLENGE JCW Sport is an obvious one and it’s a great championship for drivers to improve their craft on the best circuits in the UK. We’ve been part of the Championship since 2022 as a team and it gets better and better, plus it’s a great opportunity for youngsters to compete on the BTCC package.

The curtain came down on an incredible 2025 Mini Challenge Trophy season at the iconic Brands Hatch circuit, as the Wera Alliance Mini Race Team returned with its familiar trio — Alfie Garford (#88), Murray Richardson (#8), and Jenson Mason (#185). The season finale, held alongside the legendary Truck Racing and Fireworks Spectacular, drew a sell-out crowd to cap off another thrilling year of MINI action.

Friday – Finding the Pace

Friday testing began in damp conditions, but the Wera squad wasted no time getting up to speed. The drivers worked together to fine-tune their setups, and by the end of the day, all three were showing strong pace. Richardson impressed with quick lap times, while Garford and Mason consistently featured toward the top of the timesheets — a promising start to the team’s final weekend of 2025.

Saturday – Qualifying Drama

Saturday brought drying conditions and a bold call from all three drivers to switch to slicks for qualifying. With the surface still tricky, it was a test of balance and bravery. With just five minutes left on the clock, disaster struck — Murray Richardson lost control at Graham Hill Bend and rolled after digging into the damp runoff. Thankfully, he escaped unharmed, though the car required major repairs. Despite the disruption, the Wera drivers delivered an excellent session:

• Alfie Garford – P3

• Jenson Mason – P9

• Murray Richardson – P19

Race 1 – The Comeback

The Wera mechanics produced a herculean effort, repairing Richardson’s MINI in just two hours. Under bright skies and a buzzing crowd, Race 1 lived up to the hype. Garford charged as high as fourth before being caught in a mid-pack melee that briefly launched his car airborne — dropping both him and Mason down the order. Both fought back brilliantly, crossing the line sixth and seventh respectively, while Richardson impressed with gritty racecraft to finish where he started, completing an amazing recovery drive in a freshly rebuilt car.

Sunday – Race 2: Championship Showdown

Sunday morning dawned bright, with a sell-out crowd packing every vantage point around Brands Hatch for the penultimate race of the season. The energy was electric, and all eyes were on Garford, the only driver still with a mathematical chance of snatching the title from championship leader Alex Keens. When the lights went out, both drivers made strong starts, running firmly inside the top four. Garford knew he needed everything to go his way — and for Keens to hit trouble — but the title favourite drove flawlessly. As the laps unfolded, Keens edged into the lead and began to build a commanding gap, while Garford continued to push hard in pursuit. By the chequered flag, Keens crossed the line to seal the 2025 Mini Challenge Trophy title, with Garford finishing just behind in a composed and competitive drive. The young rookie was among the first to offer congratulations to his rival, a gesture that earned admiration across the paddock and perfectly reflected his maturity and sportsmanship.

Jenson Mason brought his car home in a brilliant P3 he also took the Rookie win and also fastest lap, and Murray Richardson finished P21.

Race 3 – The Grand Finale

The final race of the season brought the biggest crowd of the year — with monster trucks, live music, and fireworks setting the stage. Garford lined up P3, Mason P8, and Richardson P14. With just three points separating Garford and Rhys Hurd in the fight for Vice Champion, the pressure was on. At lights out, Garford held third while Mason and Richardson both gained positions, with spectacular lunges. The early laps saw Garford and Hurd locked in an intense duel for second, with Hurd eventually slipping past and moving into the lead. Garford fought back hard, pulling off spectacular overtakes and showing pure determination. With five minutes remaining, an incident caused a red flag, but Garford was able to continue. On the restart, both Garford and Mason launched brilliantly, moving into second and fourth respectively. On the final lap, under yellow flags, Garford looked set to secure Vice Champion, but a rival dived inside, pushing him to fourth at the flag, while Mason stormed to a superb second place. Richardson’s drive through the field to finish 11th, the youngster showing a never give up attitude, with lap times faster than the leaders, capped off an incredible performance in his debut season.

Team Commentary

Team Principal Pete Osborne said, “This year has been fantastic. These boys have shown maturity and improvement beyond what I expected. Alfie’s rookie title and third overall in his first year is an outstanding achievement. Murray should hold his head high — to take a race win halfway through his debut season and now be matching the front-runners is outstanding. Jenson has been superb all year — his pace and results in the final rounds show just how strong he’s become. All three lads have done me, the team, and our partners incredibly proud.”

Driver Reflections

Alfie Garford added, “This year’s been great. It’s our first year in the MINI Challenge, so we had a lot to learn, but from the start I knew we could be competitive. My goal was a podium finish in the championship, and that’s exactly what we achieved — plus the Rookie title, which feels amazing. Of course, there’s a bit of disappointment not to win the overall title, but I’m going away really proud of how I’ve driven and how much I’ve learned this season.”

Jenson Mason said, “It’s been a strong finish to the season for us. The pace has really come alive in the last few rounds and to end the year with more silverware feels fantastic. The car felt great all weekend — huge credit to the team for all their hard work.”

Murray Richardson commented, “What a year! My first full season of car racing has been an amazing learning experience. Getting that first win earlier in the year and now running on the pace of the leaders gives me massive confidence heading into next season.”

Summary

It was the perfect conclusion to a landmark year for the Wera Alliance Mini Race Team — three drivers, one united squad, and a season full of speed, progress, and pride.
